Interested in telecommuting from abroad? Here are the best countries in 2022 ranked by expats

As the trend of remote working continues to hold in the world just recovering from the ravages of the Covid-19 pandemic, this way of working is here to stay at least for the foreseeable future. To make things even more convenient, now can be a great time to try living in another country, as more and more countries are introducing digital nomad visas for those looking to travel or stay in a new country.

A 2022 annual Expat Insider survey conducted by InterNations examines some of the best possible expat destinations around the world, interviewing 11,970 expats representing 177 nationalities and living in 181 different locations. “Many people go abroad to improve their quality of life and expats say these destinations offer the best quality of life,” according to the 2022 Expat Insider report.

The Expat Insider 2022 report took a closer look at 52 expat destinations around the world to rank them based on quality of life for expats or the easiest places to settle abroad. The survey asked people about the ease of settling down, working abroad and personal finances. Interestingly, Portugal was named the best expat destination in Europe for its good social life. “More than nine in ten (94%) like the climate and the weather (compared to 62% globally), and 89% are satisfied with the air quality (compared to 65% globally). Portugal ranks seventh in the leisure options subcategory: expats are particularly satisfied with opportunities for recreational sports (87% vs. 75% globally),” the survey found.

According Reuters report, it is interesting to note that the number of foreign tourists visiting Portugal in May jumped almost six times compared to the same month last year, but is still around 9% below pandemic levels pre-coronavirus, the National Institute of Statistics (INE) said on Thursday. More than 1.58 million tourists visited in May, compared to around 274,000 a year ago when the country still had restrictions due to the pandemic, INE said and in May 2019, however, the number stood at 1.73 million, the report further noted.

The second country to make the list was Spain, which was voted the top expat destination for quality of life. According to the survey, people ranked Spain so high on the list of good quality of life because of the variety of culinary and gastronomic options, opportunities for sports, culture and nightlife.

Meanwhile, Indonesia ranked second in the Expat Insider report, but those interviewed felt there could be room for improvement. “Overall, Indonesia ranks second in the Expat Insider 2022 survey and scores highest in the Ease of Settlement Index (2nd): 90% of expats describe the Indonesian population as generally friendly ( vs. 66% globally), as well as friendly towards foreign residents in particular (vs. 65% globally),” the report states.

“Almost half (46%) even think they couldn’t be friendlier to expats, compared to 27% globally. With a strong personal support network (66% satisfied compared to 59% globally) and excellent social life (77% satisfaction vs. 56% globally), 80% of expats feel at home in Indonesia (vs. 62% globally),” the report adds.
